Newcastle United’s Papiss Demba Cisse started off his Premier League career on the right foot with a goal that gave the Magpies a 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday at the Sports Direct Arena.

The striker from Senegal, coming back from his stint at the Africa Cup of Nations, found the net with 18 minutes left after Villa’s Robbie Keane tied the match at the end of the first half.

Demba Ba gave Newcastle the lead in the 30th with a right-footed shot that found the corner of the goal, giving him his 16th this season. Ba got the ball off the rebound from a Ryan Taylor attempt that was blocked by Stephen Warnock.

Keane’s strike came in the injury time of the first half, with the assist coming from Charles N’Zogbia. The French midfielder currently on loan from LA Galaxy had a great run from the left side of the pitch until he fired a cross from inside the penalty box for a simple right-footed finish for the 31-year-old.

With the match up for grabs, 26-year-old Cisse was on top of the penalty box when he brought down a volley from the left side and finished with his left foot which was perfectly placed on the top-left corner of the goal.

The high-energy game however was marred by injuries to Newcastle’s Leon Best and Taylor.

Before the goal from Ba, Warnock’s challenge took out Taylor’s legs from underneath him which resulted in him being stretchered off the pitch.

Starting 11 striker Best only played 14 minutes before being subbed for Cisse. He had an apparent knee injury that could keep him out for six weeks.

The win moved Newcastle to fifth – above Arsenal, for a surprising bid for the Champions League place.
