In last week’s Europa League tie between Manchester City and Porto in Portugal, fans that allegedly made racist comments and gestures included children who were found in executive boxes at the Estadio do Drago.
Citing racism, City made a complaint minutes after the match was over.
In their 2-1 win against the defending champions, the English outfit pointed at specific sections were racist announcements were made towards Mario Balotelli and Yaya Toure.
In their defence, Porto denied the claims, stating that what the fans were chanting was “Kun, Kun, Kun” in reference to City’s Sergio Aguero’s nickname.
However, videos taken from mobile phones that were uploaded in the Internet seemed to support the allegations of City as the Manchester squad submitted these as evidence to UEFA.
There have not been reports on what UEFA have decided with the evidence and actions of the fans, but what is reported is that they have opened up disciplinary proceedings against a section of City fans, for lighting up fireworks at kick-off.
Some reports from City fans located in the VIP area claimed that they saw children “below teenage age” behind the glasses of executive boxes making racist remarks towards the players.
“As soon as it started in the stadium we noticed kids in the executive areas starting to copy it,” shared a City fan.
“It was disgusting. How Porto can claim there was no racist abuse of the City players is an absolute joke,” added the fan
Officials have yet to comment on the allegations towards the minors and have not made it clear what the repercussions against the children would be.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Racism isn’t welcome in football yet some people have difficulty remembering that. As children see what others do, they grow up in a society that apparently accepts these behaviours. They do not see it as incorrect because grown-ups do it. Their parents should be punished for being irresponsible.
