Chelsea FC has made an official statement denying rumours of Ashley Cole mocking Manchester City after the Blues defeated the visitors at Stamford Bridge 2-1 Monday.
According to a number of news reports, the defender had taunted City in the tunnel after the match about the current league leaders’ Champions League defeat that booted them out of the competition.
‘F*cking have some of that!’ Cole allegedly said.
He also reportedly repeated the Chelsea crowd’s chant, ‘Thursday night, Channel Five’, which spoke of City’s third place finish in the Champions League, and their effective demotion into the Europa League.
According to Chelsea representatives however, the reports about the supposed incident are false and completely untrue to Cole’s character.
‘Contrary to reports, Ashley Cole did not say anything to the opposition in the tunnel after Monday’s game,’ read the statement on Chelsea’s official website.
‘Ashley has huge respect for the players and staff at Manchester City, many of whom he knows personally and calls friends.’
Reports indicate that Manchester City’s lineup features a number of players like Joe Hart, James Milner, Joleon Lescott, Wayne Bridge and Kolo Toure, who are with Cole in the England squad.
When asked about his knowledge of the incident, City manager Roberto Mancini simply stated that he knows nothing after the rumoured angry exchange in the tunnel.
‘I don’t know if Cole said something,’ said Mancini. ‘I don’t know what he said. I don’t understand.’
A more insistent statement came from Chelsea manager Andre Villas-boas, who blasted the rumours as nothing but falsehood.
‘It’s untrue and it’s unfair,’ said AVB. ‘It really doesn’t matter now.’
Despite the statements from either side, eyewitness accounts suggest that the exchange did indeed happen.
‘It was more indignation and a bit of antagonism than anything else, certainly not serious’ said an observer speaking to The Mirror.
‘But it was obvious Cole was trying to wind the City players up after what the Chelsea players felt was a really big win for them.’
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Seems like a pretty big rumour for every part of it to be untrue. And if the eyewitness accounts are in fact true, then Cole’s actions could dent whatever noble efforts Chelsea had to eventually seal the win. Such actions would cheapen their victory and put the team in a bad light, no matter how great the win might have been.
