In an unexpected emotional statement, Chelsea bigwig Bruce Buck expressed his desire to trounce Premier League opponents Arsenal in the upcoming London derby.
While speaking about the Blues’ failure to repurchase their freehold of Stamford Bridge, Buck explained his plans to discuss the matter with the club’s board.
He afterwards, albeit off-topic, followed it up by expressing his hopes to see Chelsea hand Arsenal a heavy defeat.
‘We will meet with Mr. [Roman] Abramovich and the rest of the board and decide what, if anything, we will do to take things forward,’ Buck started.
‘We are Chelsea fans and I can only hope that, on Saturday, we all get together, support this club and beat the crap out of Arsenal.’
The chairman’s hopes find much support from Chelsea’s history with the Gunners, winning six of their last 10 encounters.
Buck made the statement during a meeting set at the Great Hall in Stamford Bridge.
The event saw the club, after a weeks-long battle, come out unsuccessful in convincing a number of Chelsea Pitch Owner shareholders let Chelsea buy back the ownership for their home stadium.
‘I guess on behalf of Ron [Gourlay, chief executive], myself and Mr. Abramovich, obviously we are disappointed,’ Buck had stated. ‘But we recognise and respect that the shareholders have spoken.’
And indeed they have, as according to The Guardian 3,569 (61.1%) votes from the shareholders were tallied supporting the club’s bid, falling short of the required 75%.
The club’s plans to repurchase the freehold were seen as a precursor to their plans to transfer to a new stadium with a 60,000 capacity. According to Chelsea, doing so would not be possible for them if they could not gain any revenue from the grounds that Stamford Bridge is currently erected.
‘While we remain as ambitious as ever,’ said the club in an official statement, ‘this decision could slow down our progress. ‘
In their efforts the club reportedly clashed with critics who accused them of the lack of transparency. Led by a campaign boldly named “Say No CPO”, the opponents explained that while they were not at all against Chelsea’s relocation, the club did not give the proper amount of time for the shareholders to discuss and debate the matter.
There is also the lack of a plan to transfer the current-standing CPO deal to a different stadium other than Stamford Bridge.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
OPINION: One would think that for some reason Buck was more concerned about the match than about losing their stadium bid. If so, then one could say this is one of those times when business just takes a backseat for the sake of some honest, testosterone-doused emotion.
