Despite his apparent struggles in performance, Liverpool’s Andy Carroll assured he has no regrets about switching over from Newcastle United, in the £35 million deal that made him the most expensive British footballer in history.
The striker said he is also determined to make a successful career at Anfield.
He’s had a tough time adjusting at the Merseyside club, scoring only six goals in 36 appearances. With a lot of people disappointed with his performance, there have been talks of him being sold back to Newcastle. Other rumours have linked him to a swap deal with rivals Manchester City for estranged striker Carlos Tevez.
The Reds refused to comment on the speculations, insisting they are keen to keep the striker. Carroll has also denied entertaining such offers and addressed that he is happy wearing his current uniform.
“The club has been great with me and everyone outside the club has been fantastic and I am enjoying it down here,” said the 23-year-old. “Everyone has backed me and helped us along the way. I have signed a contract here and this is the team I am playing for.”
Though he has failed in consistently scoring goals, Carroll’s performance in Saturday’s 2-1 fourth-round FA Cup win against Manchester United saw him play important parts in netting both goals.
The towering attacker caused United’s goalkeeper David de Gea to miss marking Daniel Agger who was able to head home a Liverpool corner kick.
And with two minutes left in the match, he headed a ball to a surging Dirk Kuyt who was able to find the net with a right-footed strike that gave the Reds a 2-1 lead, to which Manchester United had no response.
“I thought I had done well and everyone else did, but I’ve got to keep working on it and it will come,” Carroll said.
“I am just getting into my stride now. Everyone is getting used to how I play and I am getting used to everyone else.”
“Obviously it was nice to get an assist, but it doesn’t really matter who sets them up or scores them really, as long as we get through like we did with everyone playing well.”
Liverpool advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup and will be up against Championship club Brighton and hove Albion. Their first match is on the 18 February.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Hopefully, these signs point to better form for Carroll. The money spent on him should not go to waste and he should avoid being the constant discussion as being the season’s biggest flop. He may not score the goals but as long as he stays relevant with the ones the Reds do score, he will silence the critics.
Luis Suarez confirmed that he still dreams of one day playing in Spain, but reminds everyone that he’s still happy to play with Liverpool for the time being.
