England coach Fabio Capello recently assured that his players were free to do whatever they wished, so long as they emerge victorious in their path to the Euro 2012 championship.
According to the coach, activities that include drinking and ‘going with women’ are perfectly acceptable as long as the game ends in a win.
The statement, made to members of the press, came as an astonishment considering Capello’s disciplinarian attitude that saw him reprimanding Andy Carroll for excessive drinking.
‘Everything when you win is good, the perfect choice, the best choice, if you drink or go with women,’ said Capello.
‘Everything is good if you win. When you lose, it’s a disaster. The results are the most important thing.’
Accounts of that interview recalled a member of the FA press preparing to step in and put a stop to the interview, when Capello signalled for him to stop.
‘I know what I’ve said,’ the England coach insisted. ‘Don’t worry. Everything is good when you win.’
Capello furthered on his point by illustrating the difference between the English and the Dutch team during the World Cup 2012 in South Africa.
According to him, England drew comments being together for an extensive amount of time during the competition. However, the Dutch squad, who reached the final round, stuck together far longer than the English team.
‘[The Dutch] were together for two months, more or less,’ commented Capello. ‘You saw what happened – it was fine because they finished second and they had a chance one-on-one with the goalkeeper in the final but didn’t score.’
Reports indicate that David Bernstein, chairman of the FA, presumed the English team would be less isolated and would mingle more freely if they get past Montenegro and qualify for the Euro Championships.
Capello attested that the squad’s decisions would only be considered good if they produce a win.
‘It’s about the results, then you ask questions,’ he said.

OPINION: Capello’s philosophy may be strange, but there is a chance that many England supporters would agree. At day’s end, as far as the competition goes, it’s whether you win or lose that counts. Nothing else beyond it matters.
