THE new kid on the Chelsea block has started getting a feel of how it is to be training with his new team.

“It’s like first day in school,’’ beamed Gary Cahill as he finally trained with the rest of the Blues on Tuesday, a day after signing a five-and-a-half-year deal worth £7 million.

The 26-year-old player plucked from Bolton is hoping to settle in fast with the Stamford Bridge club after more than two weeks of having his contract settled.

“Amazing, it was exciting today coming in!’’ he added.  “But obviously I was a bit nervous, like your first day at school.’’

He also described as brilliant meeting all the lads and the staff, as well as getting to know his new training base on Cobham, Surrey.

Speaking to Chelsea TV, Cahill said: “It is fantastic. It’s a great place and the facilities are unbelievable. You don’t want for much down here.’’

The centre-back, who will be wearing jersey No. 24, reiterated his reason why he left Bolton, and that is the chance to battle Europe’s top clubs while playing for Chelsea.

He is expected to make his debut against Norwich on Saturday and will probably be used more as partner of captain John terry in manning the Blues’ defence.

Cahill looks to Chelsea as a massive club who aim for trophies season in, season out. “It’s a big opportunity for me to be a part of that.’’

With the Blues, Cahill will be receiving a weekly salary of £80,000 or £20,000 less than what he has previously demanded.

In acquiring Cahill, Chelsea beat out Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur who also made a bid for the England international.

Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas said that Cahill’s arrival will make Chelsea a better team.

Goalkeeper Peter Cech also welcomed Cahill warmly, saying: “Gary’s an international defender, and English defender, and you always welcome internationals into the fold because it improves the squad.’’

With Cahill around, Cech said he expects Chelsea to compete strongly for honours.
