Former Blackburn player Tony Parkes has recently joined the growing army of anti-Steve Keane factions and said that he was a detriment to the squad’s progress.
Parkes, a former Blackburn midfielder and manager, said that he remains hopeful that this former team would advance further in the English Premier League, but does not see that a possibility under Keane’s management.
‘Steve Keane will never turn the fans in his favour,’ said Parkes, currently the caretaker manger of Blackpool. ‘That chance went a long time ago.
‘The fans are the people who ultimately get managers the sack, so surely that has to happen with Steave Keane? It’s all very well saying, “It’s only a minority who are against him”, but it isn’t.
‘As a Blackburn Rovers fan through and through, it is very difficult to see the club in this situation. You wonder what is going to happen at the end of all this.’
Parkes also pointed his fingers at current club owners Venky’s, who acquired the club from the Walker Trust a year ago. The former player declared that the Indian owners’ trust in Keane is misplaced.
‘We have people running the club who know nothing about football and have got rid of all the people who could have helped.
‘It beggars belief how people who know nothing about this football club have come in and taken apart everything that was good about it.
‘Venky’s have got to get real. They may like the manager, but he is going to take the football club down.’
Parkes then turned his blame to the Walker Trust for agreeing to sell the club to begin with.
According to the former Rover, what’s desperately needed right now is Venky’s willingness to spend big to boost the club lineup. He added that the next 20 games in the EPL are the owners’ window to prove themselves worthy to run the club.
‘If Venky’s are going to back Steve Keane, which I fear they are going to do, then they need to back him with money. They have yet to show they are prepared to do that.’
The Rovers’ horrid performance shows 4 straight defeats followed by a recent 1-1 draw against Liverpool, with Blackburn’s solitary point being an own goal.
The team currently sit at 20th place.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
It’s bad enough when the fans begin to call for your exit. But for a Blackburn manager, having someone deemed ‘Mr. Blackburn’ suggest that you are ruining the team is a big blow. Either Keane turn this around or he leaves before the club sink entirely.
