STAY at Manchester United.
That is what David Beckham wants Rio Ferdinand to think about after his contract with the top Premier League club ends next season.
Beckham made the advice following the LA Galaxy’s 0-2 loss to the New York Red Bulls in the US Major League Soccer on Tuesday that sent the Bulls to the playoffs.
Beckham got wind of the Sportsmail’s exclusive report n the Chicago Fire’s intention to sign up Ferdinand, his former teammate at United and England national team.
Asked whether he would recommend Ferdinand to resume his career at the MLS, the 36-year-old Beckham said: “It’s unfair for me to even comment on a player that’s under contract at Manchester United, loved by the fans. He’s a very good player. That’s the first time I’ve heard those rumours but I’m not going to comment because he’s a United player and as a former Manchester United player I want him to stay there.’’
Beckham also took time to remark on his reported transfer plans to French outfit Paris St. Germain.
PSG sporting director Leonardo, who worked with Beckham at AC Milan, has shown interest in acquiring the LA Galaxy star to which the later said he was “flattered.’’
Leonardo said last month that the door is open at the Parc des Princes “to someone that I really appreciate and admire so much.’’
Beckham reciprocated by saying he loves the Brazilian. “I had a good relationship with him when I was at Milan the first time and obviously when he was manager the second time.’’
The former England captain said Leonardo is a great manager and person. “I’m flattered that he wants me to go and join the team in Paris.’’
But Beckham added there’s no need to make hasty decisions. “We’ll see. I’ve always said I’ll wait till the end of the season and see how I feel physically and then decide. There’s no rush for myself.’’
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Beckham may be right to say that Ferdinand must stay at Old Trafford. Ferdinand can still be good for another season if he fights off injuries. His stint at the MLS can wait.
Luis Suarez confirmed that he still dreams of one day playing in Spain, but reminds everyone that he’s still happy to play with Liverpool for the time being.
