Becks bent on playing in London Olympics

DAVID Beckham may have already ruled out returning to the Premier League but playing for his country’s football squad in next year’s London Olympics excites him a lot.

‘I’m a Leytonstone boy. The east end of London is where I grew up, and the Olympics would be something I’d like to be part of,’ he said on Tuesday after the LA Galaxy wrapped up their Asian tour in Australia.

Beckham may have played his last match for the Galaxy, the newly-crowned Major Soccer League champions, who nipped Melbourne Victory 4-3 on penalties during their exhibition game.

‘To represent my country in the part of London where I grew up would be pretty special,’ he added.  ‘My grand dad played on Hackney Marshes, my dad played on Hackney Marshes. So it would be special.’

The 36-year-old Beckham is contemplating on a return to Europe following a juicy offer from French outfit Paris Saint-Germain.

But he was also reported to be considering another stint at Galaxy or playing for other clubs in Europe.

He had earlier expressed that a return to England would always be complicated by his allegiance to Manchester United, the team he once captained and which he left in 2003.

Beckham stressed that next year’s Olympics could give him an opportunity, albeit short, of seeing action again in England.

‘I’m a Man United fan through and through and it would always be difficult for me to go back and play in the Premiership for any other team except for Manchester United,’ he said.

A crowd of 34,000 watched the Galaxy-Melbourne Victory fixture and Beckham was wildly cheered each time he had ball possession. He was substituted three minutes from the end of regulation.

The Galaxy ended their Asian tour unbeaten. They had earlier beaten the Indonesian All Stars 1-0 in Jakarta and the Philippine Azkals 6-1 in Manila.
