Dangerously spurring the ire of Manchester City supporters, football icon David Beckham recently commented that the Old Trafford club will never fall equal to bitter rivals Manchester United.
While acknowledging the squad as a steadily-growing force in the Champions League, Beckham dismissed possibilities of City becoming a dominant force in English football.
‘They’ve got great players in the team,’ was Beckham’s comment to reporters on the team’s steady rise. ‘But they are never going to be Man United.’
The former United midfielder also spoke of City’s massively-growing funds, before quickly discounting it as a non-factor for the team’s overall performance in comparison to his old squad.
‘The money that has been pumped in has been incredible,’ quipped Beckham. ‘Players have been bought and that does a lot for the club and for the team.’
‘[City] might be a threat against teams this season and seasons to come,’ he continued. ‘But United have got the history and silverware over the last 20 years.’
Currently playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy, 36-year old Beckham stated that the possibility of him returning to the Premier League and play against United is a notion best laid to rest.
‘I have played for the biggest club in England and I wouldn’t like to play against them,’ said Beckham. ‘At the end of the day I only want to be known as a Manchester United player and that’s the way it will stay.’
On the topic of Sir Alex Ferguson, Beckham assured that despite the rift that eventually developed towards the end, the respect he harboured for his former manager has never wavered.
‘He is a legend and I have so much respect,’ he said. ‘He was a father figure to me. He works hard at what he does. He is the best at what he does…he is the best manager in football.’
Luis Suarez confirmed that he still dreams of one day playing in Spain, but reminds everyone that he’s still happy to play with Liverpool for the time being.
