OTHER than expressing his intention to play once more for the LA Galaxy, there is another reason why David Beckham wants to be in perfect shape.
He would like to be captain of Team Great Britain at this summer’s London Olympics.
The 36-year-old midfielder finalised his fresh contract with the Galaxy last week and declared: “I want to be captain.”
Beckham said it would be special and lucky enough for any player if he serves as captain of his country and lead Great Britain in the Olympics.
To make an impression, the veteran playmaker showed he can still be competitive as he joined the Galaxy on Monday during their pre-season training at the Home Depot Center.
He took part in various exercises under heavy downpour in a bid to keep his fitness and convince Team GB boss Stuart Pearce that he’s in the pink of health and ready to lead the contingent right at their home soil.
“It’s an Olympics in the east of London, where I grew up and I am excited about, hopefully, being involved,” said Beckham.
The former Three Lions skipper has already talked with Pearce about his intention and believes he has a chance of making the team “as long as I’m fit, healthy and in form.”
Beckham thumbed down offers from Premier League clubs to stay at Galaxy, the team he helped win the Major League Soccer crown last season.
“I’m happy here (Los Angeles) so that was a major factor in my decision – my family, my children, and playing for the Galaxy,” he reiterated. “That was what I was passionate about.”
He added that retirement was never a part of his plans.
“I’ve not even started thinking about retirement yet. Last season was such a special season, not just because we were champions but the way we played and conducted ourselves on and off the field,” he said.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Beckham has long been the “face’’ of English football and it would be appropriate to reward him with the captaincy during the London Olympics. He may have seen better days playing-wise but his appeal remains as strong as ever.
Luis Suarez confirmed that he still dreams of one day playing in Spain, but reminds everyone that he’s still happy to play with Liverpool for the time being.
