DAVID Beckham could be Paris Saint-Germain’s leading light if he ends up playing with the French side next.
Beckham’s career at LA Galaxy ended on a glorious note after they won the Major League Soccer crown last Sunday and the French side are among those who have shown interest in snaring Beckham as his contract with the American outfit ends this season.
Record-signing Javier Pastore said on Wednesday that Beckham’s experience would be a huge help to young PSG players like him.
“He could help us young players a lot. It would be enriching to talk to him,’’ Pastore told the French sports daily L’Equipe.
The 22-year-old Argentine attacking midfielder, signed this year by PSG for a reported €42 million (US$60 million), added that Beckham has an imposing presence and no one in the club has a list of achievements and background of the Englishman’s calibre.
Beckham, 36, has seen action in three World Cups and won three league crowns with Manchester United and Real Madrid before he moved to the MLS in 2007.
The former England captain has yet to make up his mind whether he will return to play in Europe but PSG are keen to have him on their side.
PSG director Leonardo said recently he would welcome Beckham to play for the club who have wealthy Qatari owners. Only this year, the Qataris splurged €82 million (US$116 million), including the fee of Pastore.
The French outfit have several players aged 24 years or younger and the inclusion of Beckham, according to Pastore, would be valuable.
PSG have evolved into an attractive club for other players that even some of Pastore’s teammates in Argentina have requested him for endorsement.
Pastore believes that if a world-class player like Beckham joins them in the near future, PSG will be a big club on the world stage.
PSG are presently atop the French league table, leading Montpellier on goal difference after bowing at home to Nancy 0-1 last weekend. They battle arch rivals Marseille on Sunday.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Pastore’s form is currently in tatters and he must recover to prove he is worth his price tag. Clearly, the young PSG players, including the Argentine, need someone to look up to on and off the pitch and Beckham is a perfect fit for that role.
Luis Suarez confirmed that he still dreams of one day playing in Spain, but reminds everyone that he’s still happy to play with Liverpool for the time being.
