Despite Chelsea’s humiliating, below-par performance as of lately, Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas responded to rising public speculation and insisted that he believed he will remain at his post as the season closes.
Amidst growing anticipation and perhaps clamour for Blues owner Roman Abramovich to sack him, AVB stated that while the team have been struggling with their performance under his guidance, he would retain Abramovich’s confidence and trust.
‘I am 100 percent certain I will be at Chelsea at the end of the season. Sure, sure,’ said AVB. ‘We have a three-year project here and we all believe in it.
‘Even if we go out of the Champions League and don’t win the Premier League, I will keep my job. I am very confident of that.’
The speculation over the safety of AVB’s position rose after Sunderland manager Steve Bruce was fired earlier this week due to poor performance of a club that by his departure were two points above the drop zone.
In Chelsea’s situation, although they currently enjoy a fairly safe spot at 5th place, their overall form shows 4 wins in 10 matches.
More so, their last 5 games have resulted in 3 defeats, including a recent home loss that took the Blues out of the Carling Cup competition.
At the moment the Blues are struggling to keep themselves in contention for the Premier League title, as well as somehow break through to the last 16 of the Champions League.
But despite their comparatively ghastly performance, AVB remains positive.
‘I don’t think it’s a crisis point. We just have to pull ourselves together again.
‘We can only apply ourselves to hard work and continue to believe we are going to get out of this situation.’
Under pressure to bring silverware to the club, AVB stated that their effectiveness can only be determined as the season closes.
‘There are no schedules for achieving different kinds of things,’ he said. ‘We have spoken about our responsibilities before for this season and at the moment we are missing out in one competition, which is the Carling Cup.
‘But it is only at the end of the season that we can make a judgment.’
The Blues manager went on to defend his approach to the game, which involves improving the defence and developing the younger players.
‘The players will never lose faith because the philosophy is not a cancer of this football club,’ said Villas-Boas. ‘The philosophy is not the reason why we are losing games.
‘It is a misconception. The philosophy is [about] playing good football for the fans, good football to try and win games – we have been trying to do that.’
AUTHOR’S OPINION
The trouble with AVB’s statements is that they’re no different from what other Chelsea managers have said, before Abramovich sent them packing. There is no room for excuses, based on what Abramovich has shown. The only way for AVB to save his behind is to win games. And he’s not doing that at the moment.
