FERNANDO Torres is available for European ties but it is not sure if he’ll make Chelsea’s starting lineup in their next outing.
The Blues clash with Genk in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday but manager Andre Villas-Boas is not confirming if Torres could be inserted to the starting 11 for the Group C tiff.
Torres, who missed Chelsea’s last two Premier League outings as he serves a three-match suspension following his red card against Swansea on September 24, played in the Blues’ last CL game against Valencia.
Villas-Boas did not elaborate on Torres’ situation. “The decision is made but I wouldn’t like to share it. What is most important is he is in the 18-man squad.’’
Torres’ absence in the domestic absence was not felt at all by the Blues who have converted eight goals against Bolton and Everton. Taking the spotlight in their resurgence were young forward Daniel Sturridge, Didier Drogba and Juan Mata.
Villas-Boas added it would be a major snub if he leaves Torres on the bench despite his sluggish form since he moved from Liverpool following a British record 50-million pound move in January.
“He (Torres) has been out for quite a long time but fortunately he was able to have some action with the Spanish team to keep him in good form,’’ said Villas-Boas, adding Torres’ attitude in training has been good.
Despite the starting 11 issue, Chelsea are the solid picks to hurdle the Belgian side who are labouring to mirror their success last season due to injuries and player departures.
Among those who left is young goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois who was signed by the Blues during the last transfer window. Another Genk player being eyed by the Blues is talented midfielder Kevin de Bruyne.
Villas-Boas said de Bruyne, who is hoping to feature in the game against Chelsea after recovering from injury, is an interesting player. “He can play in several positions and is exceptionally gifted technically.’’
AUTHOR’S OPINION
OPINION: The Blues should be wary of the Belgians. If Andre Villas-Boas does not find an immediate cure to their surprisingly leaky defence, an upset could rock the Stamford Bridge. As for Torres, he should be featured so he can gain more confidence.
Luis Suarez confirmed that he still dreams of one day playing in Spain, but reminds everyone that he’s still happy to play with Liverpool for the time being.
