CHELSEA manager Andre Villas-boas has declared that his squad are not good enough to claim the Premier League title.
The statement came after the Blues fell to Aston Villa 1-3 last weekend at Stamford Bridge, earning the team a right booing from their own supporters.
According to AVB, it seems that considering the point distance between them and current leaders Manchester City, the chances of them having a decent shot at the title is near non-existent.
‘Our squad is not good enough to win the league,’ said Villas-boas. ‘Not this year, not with this distance of points.’
The Blues manager continued, stating that the problems currently plaguing the squad are not limited to their weak defence that allowed Aston Villa to net three goals.
‘I don’t see that performance being only related to defensive problems,’ said AVB. ‘If there is something to correct, we need to regain that confidence in the way we build up from the back. It’s an easy thing to solve with players of this technical ability.’
Chelsea’s loss came after 6 straight matches without defeat. However from a different perspective, despite this being the first loss in 7 matches, this follows 3 straight draws, giving Chelsea 4 games without a victory.
This lag in form comes after the Blues put away clubs like Manchester City and Newcastle United.
Chelsea are next set to visit the Wolverhampton Wanderers; considering the necessary changes, Villas-boas stated that his squad had to develop a stronger mentality in order to claim a win.
‘We have to dig deep in ourselves to show the right strength of character, that we showed when we played at Newcastle and people expected us to slip. We will have to fin d that motivation once again and it’s a plus that we play within 48 hours.
‘The December fixtures were always going to be difficult and are proving so for all the top clubs. We haven’t made the most of the opportunities. If we had continued to be competent from what we did against Manchester City we would maybe be challenging for the league. You can say we might have lost it in December.
Villas-boas conceding the title could shove back into the public’s attention the fact that Villas-boas was paid £75 million by club owner Roman Abramovich for the sole purpose of securing titles. Failure to do so could place AVB in the same situation as predecessor Carlo Ancelotti, who was sacked after a season without silverware.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Kudos to AVB for admitting what’s become undeniably obvious. Good luck to him though as he tries to explain to Abramovich two things: why their season is likely to end the way the last one did (no silverware), and why Abramovich should keep him around despite that.
Luis Suarez confirmed that he still dreams of one day playing in Spain, but reminds everyone that he’s still happy to play with Liverpool for the time being.
