AVB: Chelsea have to fight for victory

CHELSEA FC manager Andre Villas-boas recently stated that while winning the Premier League title is not at all impossible, doing so would require greater effort and focus from his team.

Currently under public fire due to the Blues’ 3 defeats (2 at home) in 4 matches, the Portuguese said that the challenges posed by the current League are significantly harder but can be overcome.

‘We have to focus on what we are doing,’ he told reporters.  ‘The Premier League has got more difficult, we have to be fair and say that.  It’s not impossible but it is more difficult.’

AVB continued, hinting that the fate of the team could be determined by the outcome of their matches set for December.

‘We have to trust the December fixtures, but above all we have to find the belief again to fight for the title,’ the Portuguese insisted.  ‘As difficult as it looks, there are so many points in front of us that we can still fight for it.’

In the current season the Blues have so far played 12 Premier League matches, from which they took 7 wins, only 1 draw and 4 losses.  Experts are pegging this to be the club’s worst start since Roman Abramovich took over in 2003.

Their next match sets them up against hosts Bayer Leverkusen for a Champions League match.  Following this is a league match against the Wolves, and a Carling Cup quarter-final that faces them against a Liverpool team that just recently defeated them 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s first December league fixtures have them facing Newcastle, Manchester City and Wigan.

‘The most important thing is finding winning ways straight away, if possible against Bayer Leverkusen…that is a massive game,’ he said.

‘Then we have three games in the Premier League where we must try to get nine points.  The challenge is to have the belief and strength to fight for those nine points.’

Acknowledging the massive undertaking his team is facing, AVB stated that the challenge for the Blues remains the same.

‘It has not been the brightest of starts – the worst for quite some time,’ admitted the manager.  ‘But we have to have belief and believe in the work to get back to winning ways.  The players have immense talent and I believe in them.’

At present, Villas-boas is said to be facing possibly permanent consequences to be dealt by a Roman Abramovich likely upset by the Blues’ unfavourable performance.

However, reports state that the owner is fully backing AVB, believing him to be the best man to revive the squad despite their current display.
