Former manager Carlo Ancelotti recently restated his plans to return to Englsh football and manage a team in the Premier League.
The Italian produced massive success as Chelsea manager during the 2009-2010 season, bringing them the Premier League title and the FA Cup. The following season, however, ended with the Blues without silverware, causing Ancelotti to lose his job as manager.
According to Ancelotti, his ideal plan is to return to the English league and manage a squad that shows competitiveness, passion and drive.
‘I don’t want to name names because these teams have managers,’ he said, ‘but I would like to manage a team that has ambition.’
Ancelotti described the English Premier League as the most competitive in all of European football, and his desire is to build a lasting career in the competition.
‘I would like Italian football to be the best,’ said the Italian, ‘but this is not the truth at the moment. I would like to stay here if it’s possible to find another club – I love the atmosphere.’
Speaking to BBC Radio, Ancelotti described his Chelsea experience and sacking in nothing but a positive light.
‘When you think about this I can say it was a really fantastic experience,’ he said. ‘I had a fantastic opportunity.
‘Obviously you have to win because Chelsea is built to win.’
Ancelotti’s sacking after Chelsea’s failure to win silverware added credence to the belief that Blues owner Roman Abramovich considered trophies as a top priority for club success.
‘The first thing is he loves football,’ said Ancelotti about the controversial Chelsea owner. ‘The second is he is very close to the players. He gave me fantastic support in two years. He does not like to be on the front pages of the papers. That’s his choice, but as an owner I think he’s fantastic.’
With Ancelotti’s sacking last came the dismissal of assistant manager Ray Wilkins – a development that came as a surprise to the Italian.
‘I don’t know what happened,’ he said. ‘That was the decision of the club – I was surprised, everyone was surprised, but what can we do? Just accept the decision.
‘There is a different culture at Chelsea,’ he continued. ‘It has a technical director and as a manager I don’t want to be involved in that decision.’
Ancelotti added that he came to Abramovich regarding the Wilkins’ dismissal. He refused to expound on the matter.
‘I received an answer, but I don’t like to speak about this because the time has gone,’ he said. ‘I think we worked well. He has a lot of knowledge, a lot of charisma, a lot of personality.’
Ancelotti was replaced by Andre Villas-boas, under whose management Chelsea currently stand at third place in the Premier League table.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
OPINION: Ancelotti’s sacking was both surprising and perhaps unnecessary. Of course if it was up to Abramovich (which it was), a lack of silverware is enough to send a manager flying out of Stamford Bridge. The man needs to reclaim his rep. Whether or not there’s a place for him in the EPL is the question.
