Tottenham Hotspur are looking forward to a more lethal range of offensive options this season as they complete the loan signing of Emmanuel Adebayor from Manchester City.
Following a series of negotiations, the striker has found himself in White Hart Lane for a season-long loan to the Spurs.
‘We are delighted to announce the signing of Emmanuel Adebayor on a season-long loan from Manchester City,’ read a statement posted on the Spurs’ official website.
According to Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, the addition of the striker to the lineup could very well bolster the squad’s attack options.
The 27-year old joined the Spurs coming from a half-season loan at Real Madrid. His inclusion to the line-up addresses Redknapp’s need for another striker after irregular performances from Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Roman Pavlyuchenko.
Adebayor’s move to Tottenham, however, poses the threat of igniting added controversy due to past accusations from the striker, who was at the time with Real Madrid, about racist chants towards him coming from the crowd at White Hart Lane.
The final stretch of Adebayor’s transfer to the Spurs was unofficially confirmed by an earlier announcement by Manchester City staff Brian Marwood about him having finished a required medical exam.
The striker comes to Tottenham bringing an impressive playing history featuring 81 goals in 186 cross-competition appearances in England. He also scored a total of eight goals against the Spurs while playing for Arsenal. And he landed a total of eight goals in 22 appearances overall while on load at Real Madrid.
Along with a finalized deal for Iago Falque from Juventus, Adebayor is only one of a number of player transfers Redknapp hopes to finalize.
‘We’re working hard, [chairman Daniel Levy] is on a couple of transfers at the moment,’ Redknapp informed reporters.
An option to bring in Joe Cole from Liverpool is reportedly also on the table.
‘I love Joe, I’m a big fan of Joe but I haven’t spoken to Kenny [Dalglish] about him,’ said Redknapp. ‘He’s a good player and I still think he’s a kid we could get going again.’
Luis Suarez confirmed that he still dreams of one day playing in Spain, but reminds everyone that he’s still happy to play with Liverpool for the time being.
