After two straight league defeats, Bayern claimed a comfortable 4-1 victory last weekend at the Allianz Arena against Werder Bremen, securing them the three points to reclaim the Bundesliga top spot.
The win also allowed the Bavarians to leapfrog former top two teams Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach, whose match ended in a draw that held both at one point apiece.
Bayern now stand at the top with 31 points, while Dortmund and Monchengladbach trail with 30 points.
Team manager Jupp Heynckes expressed his relief over the victory, praising the squad’s chemistry and teamwork.
‘I’m relieved that we bagged the full three points,’ said Heynckes, who in the past played for and managed Borussia Monchengladbach. ‘We had a really good team out there today. We were clearly in the groove, and our communication was excellent.’
Heynckes furthered to admit that being at the top spot was something that he and his squad considered a priority.
‘It’s very important for us to be top of the league,’ he said in an article found on the team’s official website.
The manager then went on to acknowledge the performance of Netherlands international Arjen Robben, who came in less than 10 minutes after Bremen netted a 1-1 equaliser. Robben then went on to score two of the three goals that handed Bayern the victory.
‘Once Arjen Robben came on, the team played to its potential and gave a terrific response to a totally unnecessary equaliser.’
Robben’s performance came despite a pelvic injury that the player admitted still plagued him even after undergoing surgery.
‘It’s a tough time for me at present because I still feel pain occasionally,’ he said. ‘It’s all taking a very long time. Sometimes it gets better, and then it gets worse again. I’m still a long way off peak fitness.’
To his relief, however, his body seemed to be in a right condition as he set out to help answer Bremen’s comeback.
‘There was no pain at all today, and I’m very pleased about that,’ he said. ‘It was a wide open game, but we found lots of space in the second half, and we made good use of it.’
Bayern’s victory sends Werder Bremen down to 5th place with an unchanged 26 points.
‘Almost nothing worked out for us today,’ said Werder coach Thomas Schaaf. ‘We were the kind of opponents you’re glad to face. We made very little out of what did come our way, especially when we were in possession.
‘We never really pushed Bayern, and if that’s the case, you’ll never win here. I’m very disappointed.’
AUTHOR’S OPINION
After their top-form performance, Bayern deserve to return to top spot. But with only 1 point between them and Dortmund and Monchengladbach, the Bavarians are still within striking distance of the enemy. It’s far from over for them, and Bayern have to push farther away if they want to keep their lead safe.
Luis Suarez confirmed that he still dreams of one day playing in Spain, but reminds everyone that he’s still happy to play with Liverpool for the time being.
