Tottenham Hotspur are demanding that £10 million be paid to them before they approve manager Harry Redknapp’s appointment as new England manager.
According to Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, he put a £5-million release clause on Redknapp’s contract and the FA will have to pay the remainder of his contract, which with 15 months left is worth a basic £3.1 million a year.
When it runs out on June 2013, the Spurs are said to be ready to give the Englishman, whose contract has bonuses tied to it, an improved contract if he decides to stay at White Hart Lane.
Redknapp was awarded £500,000 two years ago when he helped the squad finish fourth in the Premier League. Another £1 million was given to him for getting beyond the group stages in the Champions League and for reaching the quarter-final stages where they were ultimately ousted by Spain’s Real Madrid.
As the Spurs again expect a top-four finish in the Premier League this season, the salary and bonuses are expected to be taken into account by the FA if ever they want to strike a deal with the manager – and Tottenham are certain to counter any offer.
Levy paid £5m as a transfer fee for Redknapp from Portsmouth in 2008 and insisted that it should be added to the contract if ever he considered moving on.
In 2010, the team owner and Redknapp went on a contract review and an extension was an eager option that the management took. This was also the time when the manager was eyeing a move to UAE side Al Ahli.
The 64-year-old manager’s reputation rose after taking the Spurs to the Carling Cup finals a year after he was signed. They beat Inter Milan at home before disposing of AC Milan and afterwards falling to Madrid in the Champions League.
The Spurs are currently third in the Premier League – seven points behind league-leading Manchester City and seven ahead of Chelsea.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
The Spurs are clearly keen on keeping Redknapp. They know his worth and want to have him lead the outfit to more league successes. Tottenham will only agree to sell him for a large sum of money that might lead the FA to look elsewhere.
Luis Suarez confirmed that he still dreams of one day playing in Spain, but reminds everyone that he’s still happy to play with Liverpool for the time being.
