WITH a fresh five-year contract under his belt, Javier Hernandez is now among Manchester United’s top-earning players.
The 23-year-old striker known as “Chicharito’’ (Little Pea) signed a new contract with the Red Devils worth in the region of 80,000 pounds a week, according to his agent on Wednesday.
Even though recent injuries restricted his appearances, Hernandez has so far scored twice this season following a sensational debut the last term where he pumped in 20 goals for the Old Trafford outfit who are currently atop the Premier League standings.
His agent, Eduardo Hernandez, said they have renegotiated Javier’s contract, committing the Mexican striker to United for five years. “The initial contract was good for both Javier and the club because it enabled them to see if they could fit together and if he could achieve what was expected of him.’’
The agent added that both parties met their expectations and “United were happy to reward Javier after his very good performance last season.’’
Hernandez arrived at United on a basic contract of 25,000 pounds a week. His present salary enabled him to rise in the pay scale and put him in the company of midfielder Ryan Giggs and defenders Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic.
His agent said the current fixed salary will have incentives based on the team’s success in every tournament. “Javier was not badly paid with hjs initial deal, but it was his first one and, with respect, not comparable with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Nani. But today the contract was just signed and everyone is happy. It was never likely that Javier would leave.’’
Hernandez was a virtual unknown prior to the 2010 World Cup where he starred for Mexico. His exploits impressed United who reaped dividends with their gamble acquiring him because he made a huge impact for the team since linking up.
United’s recent re-signing of Hernandez underlined their drive to tie down their present roster to long-term deals. They have already offered contract extensions to 13 players in the past 12 months.
The holders recently offered midfielder Tom Cleverley a four-year contract, while forward Danny Welbeck was also tendered improved terms.
