`Finger’ of frustration

TROUBLE struck again for Luis Suarez and this time around he could be in a tighter fix.

In his moment of desperation, he flashed the dirty finger at Fulham fans right after Liverpool lost 1-0 at Craven Cottage last Monday.

Stuff like that is instant media fodder as he was photographed doing the obscene gesture and voila, he is mired in controversy the second time around this year!

Suarez probably trails by a mile behind Mario Balotelli when committing a misdeed is concerned but his latest antic nudged him closer to the bothersome Italian.

With Fulham fans raining chants of “cheat’’ on him, Suarez apparently blew his top and when the final whistle has been sounded, he turned  to the raucous crowd and showed them the finger before heading to the dugout.

ANOTHER MESS

This was the second storm that brewed around the Uruguayan this season as he has been earlier charged by the Football Association for making racist remarks towards Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during their 1-1 standoff at Anfield last October 15.

But it seemed Suarez won’t be alone to plead for his latest case.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish swiftly came to his player’s side and said the latter is fully supported by him and the club.

At the same time, the Reds manager turned his tongue on Fulham fans while branding as “scandalous’’ their allegations and chants calling Suarez a cheat.

But Dalglish should look into the incident first, lest he be accused of coddling Suarez as if the latter were innocent. The picture showing Suarez doing the explicit gesture was flashed all over the Internet and it said it all.

Holding up your index finger towards an opponent or their followers is just as intolerable as spitting on a rival player or giving him a vicious tackle, racial slur, or any other act meant to hurt physically or mentally.

Suarez cracked for he has been Liverpool’s go-to-guy at the moment. He was utterly frustrated by his inability to poach for a goal. A disallowed goal made him upset even more for he believed they were the more deserving side to win.

A player of Suarez’s status is supposed to be steel-nerved. But the one who faced Fulham was someone who gave in easily to taunts.

He showed an ugly side of his – a mark undeserving of him to get respect and further recognition. Instead of gesturing wickedly, he should have at least smiled back at his tormentors and walked straight to the locker room.

FUSE SHORTENED

Suarez himself could have prevented Fulham fans from abusing him. His repeated diving each time he got tackled was frowned at by the home backers thus paving the way for the chants which provoked Suarez to “fight’’ back.

Because of that miscue, Suarez’s misadventure when he was still an Ajax player was recalled to mind. Before he moved to Liverpool, he gained notoriety for biting the shoulder of PSV Eindhoven defender Otman Bakkal on the shoulder during a Dutch League fixture last year. For that, he was branded the “Cannibal of Ajax.’’

Suarez has already been charged by the FA and has until Monday to air his side.

No matter what his response is, Suarez should be punished!

This is the holiday season where forgiveness rules but let him learn a lesson from his dirty finger gesture.

If he wants to bail himself out of further trouble, he must apologise and it could be better if he spices this up with a vow not to do it again. Showing remorse, after all, could lessen the chances of him getting a stiff penalty.

Respect is hard to earn in football but if Suarez could show the humble side of his, it could come his way easily probably even from non-Liverpool fanatics.
