Game of the week

Levante v Valencia

Levante have lost their grip of the top spot, and nothing matters more than reclaiming it.

Their loss to Osasuna dropped the former La Liga table leaders to 3rd place. Although this poses no danger to the club, reclaiming the prime position and again trumping league giants Barcelona and Real Madrid is an attractive incentive for a top performance.

That opportunity comes in the form of their upcoming match against Valencia, who currently trail Levante by a mere 2 points. For the visitors, a victory would prop up their points to tie with 2nd placers Barcelona, and find them at 3rd place.

For both squads, the payoff at the end is a legitimate chance to emerge the new leaders in a table that has begun to show a shift in power. As Real Madrid and Barcelona struggle to rule the La Liga once again, Levante and Valencia aim to emerge as heavy competitors worthy of the La Liga crown.

FEARLESS FORECAST

Fighting back

Seeing a team other than Real Madrid or Barcelona occupy the prime spot in the La Liga was a refreshing turn of events. I reckon Levante would like nothing more than to prove themselves as the new powerhouse once again as they host Valencia.

This however will not be easy: they have fallen short in their past 2 home matches against Valencia. But for the past weeks Levante have become mitigating hosts with 4 straight home wins.

Valencia have not only shown their strength as visitors against Levante, but against other teams as well. Their last 5 La Liga matches gave 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. Although without a perfect road record, their form presents them as intimidating visitors.>/p>

Despite an unsatisfactory record against Valencia, Levante’s excellent form this season might allow them to break a 5-game winless streak against the visitors. And although this would not not eliminate the threat of Real Madrid and Barca – both favoured to win their next matches – it would keep Levante within striking distance, ready to again ascend as soon as one of the Big Two lose their footing.

The setback to Osasuna just unmasked what stuff Levante are made of.

Valencia will try to unravel more of Levante’s weak points and prove that the latter are just a flash in the pan.

This season is a long, long way to go and despite their slow advance, giants Barcelona and Real Madrid would ultimately fight it out for the top plum.

At this stage, the big guns are now positioning themselves to get a firm hold of the upper echelon of the table so it is imperative for those who want to get into the thick of things, like Valencia, to gain ground.

Los Che won’t be intimidated by Levante and will show in their coming clash that they are the worthier side to challenge either Barca or the Los Blancos.
