Game of the week

Everton v Manchester United

A wounded and humiliated Manchester United travel to Liverpool, face Everton FC and attempt to claim victory after two winless games.

This will be Man United’s next match after their brutal drubbing in the hands of nemeses Manchester City in their own home. They will also be expected to narrow the 5-point gap with City, who booted them out of the top of the EPL table.

Although they remain a powerful squad, the Red Devils slightly falter on the road. Though undefeated, they have only tallied 2 wins in their last 5 away matches, with the other 3 ending in identical 1-1 draws.

The good news is that Everton FC are nowhere near threatening as hosts, with their last 5 matches resulting in 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 draws.

Despite their less-than-favourable home win, Everton managed to keep United at bay for the last 2 matches, which ended with a 3-3 draw and a 3-1 home win.

Should Everton manage to keep up their steady gait against United at home, the Red Devils could be up for another humiliation that perhaps they can no longer afford.

FEARLESS FORECAST

I could understand and imagine United’s desperation to win this match.

Aside from their all-too-recent humiliation in the hands of City, a loss to a mediocre squad like Everton would completely put their legitimacy in the EPL into question.

Maybe United consider this match to be merely one amongst a number of games that could send them back to first place. Or maybe they will enter Goodison Park with hopes as simple and short-term as claiming a win. Or at least avoiding a loss.

Either way their aim is to reclaim dignity. And perhaps that is enough to earn them their third away win this season.

United have been exposed as a team that are not at all invincible – a fact that Everton could capitalise on as they try to be the second squad to topple the Red Devils.

At the end of the day, however, I think United are good enough to at least avoid a second straight defeat, regardless of their opponents. For their sake, they had better get their heads out of the sand and rediscover the power that made them one of the most feared clubs in England.

If they manage to do that, the win is theirs.

Danger at Goodison Park by Wayne De Ville

The Red Devils were dazed and confused by that 6-1 pounding they got from rivals City.

They did not know what hit them as they travel to Goodison Park to try to mend their broken ego.

The Toffees should pounce while United are still in disarray and what a better place to inflict another shameful defeat to the holders than at their beloved home turf.

But the hosts should beware. The Red Devils are wounded and would definitely go for the `3’ to stay within sight of City.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men certainly do not want another embarrassment but the Toffees could give them another if they put up another lackadaisical display.
