Oh sh*t: five massive football misses

Comment: 0 September 22nd, 2011 by: admin

THANKS but no thanks to Fernando Torres, those awfully-flubbed goals, including the ones that got away when everything seems easy to get them at the back of the net, are the talk of football town again.

Of course, Torres’ mishit against Manchester United recently is on top of our Top 5 list mainly because it is still as fresh in our minds as Nando’s sputtering way to regain his scoring touch.

Fernando Torres
Manchester United vs. Chelsea (2011)

1. All Torres needed after masterfully rounding United goalkeeper David de Gea was make a simple tap but horrors of horrors, he sent the ball wide. Clearly, Nando has not yet gone over his slump. This is a top candidate for the `Miss of the Season.’

Cristiano Ronaldo
Sheffield United vs. Manchester United (2006)

2. That even the best goalscorers could miss in front of goal is clearly depicted in this Cristiano Ronaldo blunder. He received a perfect pass but sent the ball over the bar. A rare incredible miss for the former highest-paid football player in the world.

Diego Forlan
Manchester United vs. Juventus (2003)

3. This is probably one reason why Diego Forlan’s star did not shine that much at Manchester United. He shook off two defenders and the goalkeeper, had all the room to make the brace, but still failed to complete the finish.

Chris Iwelumo
Scotland vs. Norway (2008)

4. This was the miss that has probably ended striker Chris Iwelumo’s Scotland international career. The prolific Wolves hitman was in perfect spot as he got an equally perfect feed but the ending proved to be imperfect as he fired wide from about three yards out. The dismay on the faces of his teammates summed up the story of this monumental flub.

Aiyegbeni Yakubu
Nigeria vs. South Korea (2010)

5. Nigeria’s Yakubu made one of the biggest fumbles in the history of the World Cup. In the 2010 South Africa competitions, Nigeria was aiming for a place in the last 16 against South Korea but Yakubu missed a close-range shot and Nigeria’s dream was crushed. No wonder, his countrymen back home called him an ‘a**hole!’
