El Clasico WAGs showdown

Among the movers, shakers and stars in the bitter Barcelona-Real Madrid rivalry, it’s the WAGs (wives and girlfriends) who stir much frenzy.

After much thought and scrutiny, here is a (really exclusive) list of who we deem to be some of the more popular El Clasico women whose other halves equally attract attention on and off the pitch.  Also, of who we think deserves the crown of this El Clasico WAG showdown.

BARCELONA

Dorien Rose

Born to a Dutch father and German mother, 27-year old model and an actress Dorien Rose is currently seeing Ibrahim Afellay.

Her modelling career has had her grace the covers of such magazines as Elle, Glamour, Elegance, Playboy, Cosmo Girl, Beau Monde, and BLVD, to name a few.

In 2005 this sultry temptress claimed Playboy’s 2004 Playmate of the Year award – the first Dutch to receive the award.

She has also made her presence known in the movie industry, with her first role being the wife of the lead character in Concept The Movie.  Other flick roles include Millionaire, Murder Chicks, and The Playboy Experience.  She has also appeared on the small screen in shows like Shouf Shouf! the series, and Gooi Women.  She was also given a guest role in the highly-popular sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica.

In 2006 Rose became one of the founders of the Playground Agency, whose main function is to manage the Dutch Playmates.  She was declared the most successful Dutch Playmate in 2009.

Shakira

This international superstar needs no introduction.  In fact it’s her boyfriend Gerard Pique who might need it.

Of Colombian descent, Shakira burst onto the world stage in the 1990s with her first single ‘Whenever, Wherever’, which reached prominence in the UK around 2002.  She proved herself to be more than a one-hit wonder afterwards as her third album Laundry Service reached breached the 13 million mark in worldwide sales.

The trail of broken records lengthened, as Yahoo! declared her 2006 single ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ as the Best-Selling Single of the Last 10 Years.

She eventually became the highest Colombian artist ever, with over 60 million albums sold around the world.  She is also considered to be second only to Gloria Estefan in terms of the most successful Latin singer.

Last 2008 she became the fourth highest-earning woman in music history, trailing only such names as Madonna, Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion.  Her single ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)’ was chosen to be the official song for the 2010 World Cup (something that we’re certain Pique was overjoyed with, the lucky bloke).

And last November she was honoured at the Latin Grammys as 2011’s Latin Recording Person of the Year.

Antonella Roccuzzo

It appears to many that Lionel Messi may be holding his punches, errr his kicks, when it comes to being flashy towards his main squeeze.

And that could be because of true love which blossomed between the Barcelona ace and Antonella Roccuzzo as both basically grew up together in Lionel’s hometown of Rosario, Argentina, and has since been always together.

The coosome twosome met when they were just 5 years old and Lionel knew he was meant to be with Antonella, who is a cousin of his best friend Lucas Scaglia.

‘I have seen Antonella grow up, just as she has seen me grow up,’ Messi had commented.  ‘Our families know each other, so I was never in doubt.’

And for the entire length of their relationship the only thing that could be confirmed is Messi’s intention to keep everything as private as possible.

‘It has been a year since we were together and until now no one knows about this,’ Mesi was quoted earlier this year.  ‘Well, people see us together but they think this is something normal. ‘

The two were photographed while vacationing at Carnaval Sitges; Messi however waved off the paparazzi pictures as something that ‘does not matter.’

It is said that currently Roccuzzo is studying to become a professional dietician.

We may not really know the secret behind Messi’s success as football player but Antonella could be it!

REAL MADRID

Soledad Fandino

A woman who will constantly be cheering for striker Gonzalo Higuain.

This Argentina-born beauty had since her younger days dreamed of studying acting.  However her mother convincing her to study for another career along with acting in case her plans of becoming an actress don’t work out.  Fandino decided to study modelling as well.

Coincidentally, while accompanying a friend in a casting call Fandino garnered most of the attention, including that of the owner of the country’s biggest modelling agency.

From that point on Soledad’s acting career began to take shape as she nabbed roles in theatre, TV and movies.  Some of these include television shows Rebelde Way (2003), Juanita, la soltera (2006), Son de Fierro (2007), and Por Amor a Vos (2008).

She also managed to get the lead role in the movie Stephanie (2005), and in the stage play Alice in Wonderland (2009).

Much like how it was during that fateful casting call, Fandino has so far managed to at least grab the attention of the industry’s experts.  In 2004 she was nominated for the Best New Actress awards in both the Martin Fierro Awards and the Clarin Awards for her performance in No hay 2 sin 3.

Another nomination followed in 2005 for the Martin Fierro Best Actress in Comedy award for the same film.

She currently appears in a number of TV miniseries, including Maltrada, which is set to wrap up its first season this December.

Irina Shayk

Of all the girls that fell for Cristiano Ronaldo’s irresistible appeal, 24-year old Irina Shayk (born Irina Shaykhlislamova) is the one who stands out. Not surprisingly though because she is currently making the Portuguese womaniser’s world go round.

Shayk’s modelling career took an upward spiral since she graced the Swimsuit Issue of Sports Illustrated four years ago. She gained further fame by becoming the face of Italian clothing label Intimissimi. Her other numerous modelling forays landed her jobs at Victoria’s Secret, Lacoste and Cesar Paciotti, among others.

Tall, svelte and exquisitely adorable, the gorgeous Russian met Ronaldo during the run of an ad campaign for apparel giants Armani Exchange and both have been inseparable since then.

Scoring goals is a stroll in the park for Ronaldo but it looks like the renowned woman-magnet would have a hard time putting aside Shayk who was named the 2011 “Sexiest Woman in the World’’ by the Hungarian magazine Periodika. 

And last November, Shayk was honoured at Marie Claire’s Prix de La Moda Awards, where she appeared (with Ronaldo at her side) wearing a glittering gown and nabbed the Model of the Year award.  Current rumours suggest that she and Ronaldo have become engaged.

Lena Gercke

To the boys in the Real Madrid locker room, Lena Gercke is known as the main squeeze of midfielder Sami Khedira, whom she has been dating since only this year.

Her early career as a model featured a representation with Langer-Pueschel, with whom she booked photo shoots, runway shows and dance events.  But her break came in 2006 when she attended a casting call for, and eventually won the first cycle of Germany’s Next Top Model, hosted by industry icon Heidi Klum.

After her win Gercke signed contracts for both advertising and modelling, with the latter being for IMG Models in Paris.

Afterwards she also graced the pages of the American issues of Cosmopolitan, Sports Week and Glamour.  She also appeared in several print ads.

Gercke afterwards made several returns to the Next Top Model franchise with guests appearances in the cycle following her win.  She also appeared as a backstage host on the finals of Cycles 3 and 6.

In 2009 she claimed hosting duties of Austria’s next Top Model.

Arguably, the highlight of her career was in 2010 when she strutted down the runway of New York Fashion Week.

Our choice:  IRINA SHAYK

 

Having Cristiano Ronaldo as her man simply puts Shayk head and shoulders above the rest.

On the other hand, Ronaldo is one lucky Romeo to have Shayk and for this, it is in this department where he probably owns the bragging rights over Messi.

Shayk is beauty and style personified and with that enchanting aura, it is enough that other WAGS are relegated in the shade.

We absolutely agree with Periodika for naming her 2011’s Sexiest Woman in the World and we won’t disagree either to models.com for ranking her 10^th in the Top 20 Sexiest Models list. But do I hear remarks like she should have been included at least within the Top 5?
